Let Them Eat (These) Cake: Black Star Pastry

IMG_20150912_234512To be frank, I struggled quite a bit before I started writing this blog post. My fellow Sydney-based foodies will understand what I am talking about – what can I possibly tell you about Black Star Pastry that you haven’t read about in a gazillion blogs and reviews? It is one of the most famous patisserie joints in Sydney after all. Hey, but if your recently-turned Sydneysider friend dragged you back to the same place within a week after her first visit, it deserves a post. So here are some tasties we have chowed down at Black Star Pastry.

For my friend’s first visit, I took her to the Black Star Newtown store. And of course, we ordered their signature Strawberry Watermelon Cake with Rose Scented Cream. Some of you might have already seen the pictures of this cake on my Instagram. But look how pretty it is! A whole thick slice of watermelon sandwiched between two layers of almond dacquoise and fresh whipped cream with strawberries, pistachio and rose petals sitting on top. It has to be one of the prettiest cakes in Sydney!

I always love how light and refreshing this cake is. The rose cream and petals also add a very subtle yet palatable fragrance to the cake. Together with a cup of Earl Grey, I was in heaven! Oh, and have I mentioned this cake is gluten free? For those who are allergic to gluten, feel free to go nuts with this cake. 😉

We went to Black Star’s Rosebery store for her second visit. This time we were there for lunch. We both started with the Croissant with Ham and Cheese. The toasted croissant was warm, fluffy and flaky, just everything you would have expected from a nice croissant.

Then we moved on to the Vegan Chocolate Popcorn Cake. Yes, you heard me. It is vegan. Yet, the chocolate cake was so soft, moist and dense that you wouldn’t be able to tell it was vegan! This was my second time to have this cake, and it was as delightful as the first. The caramalised popcorn and freeze-dried raspberries made this chocolate cake a perfect showcase of savoury and sweet. Order this one if you want to indulge yourself in the cocoa world without a serve of guilt on the side.
