Nothing says a lazy day like comfort-food delivery. The other day Mr. D was craving for some Chinese takeaway but unfortunately there wasn’t many Chinese restaurants do delivery in our neighbourhood (Very strange, I know). So we headed to Newtown to try our luck, and decided to go with Dumpling King.
As a professional chef, Mr. D has a theory of how restaurants should keep their menus smaller and simpler. The reason to do this is to focus on what you are good at and try to excel in it. Just like a lot of other Chinese restaurants in Australia, Dumpling King has quite a large menu. But their dumpling and noodles sections are relatively smaller. So we were really excited to try some.
Our first dish was Pan Fried Northern Style Dumplings – Pork and Chives (12 pcs / AUD 10.80). The dumplings were very big and juicy, but a bit too salty to my liking. They could also have included a little bit more fillings in each dumpling. However, you really can’t beat that price for 12 dumplings in Sydney.
The Stir-Fried Handmade Noodles with Chicken (AUD 10.80) was actually quite nice. The meat was fresh and the noodles were savoury and tasty.
Handmade Dumpling and Noodle Soup (AUD 9.80) basically came with the same type of dumplings they used in the Pan Fried Dumplings dish. But since the dumplings were served with noodles and a light broth, it was ok for them to be a little saltier. Mr. D and I nod in unison that this should have come with more herbs to enhance the flavour of the broth.
We were happy with what we got for the money but they were clearly under staffed that night. There was very little service, let alone Mr. D’s beer has never come. Nevertheless, it was a decent place for budget-friendly meals.
