Thrifty Saturday: 3 Easy Ways to Create Your Own Co-ords

PhotoGrid_1411823307303As aforementioned, I am currently obsessed with co-ords. The trend is still going strong and these matchy-matchy separates are ubiquitous in every major retailer’s shop and website. But just because everyone is wearing the same pre-matched sets, doesn’t mean that we have to. I started to concoct my own pairings with items I already have, and realised it is so much fun to build my own matching sets. Stop moaning about that out-of-stock co-ord crop top because you are about to create something that is even cooler. 😉

1. Look for Similar Texture
When something is in trend, there is a high chance that a lot of retailers will carry similar items. The textured sweatshirt material is very popular for these couple seasons. For example, I got this white skirt from H&M, and the top from Dotti. Although the rhombus pattern of the top is wider than that of the skirt, the two juxtaposed to create an interesting visual effect. The slightly off matching patterns give this sports-luxe vibe set a bit more ease and attitude. I personally find this trick very useful, especially when you can’t find both the matching separates in store or one of those is not available in your size. 😛

Same case applies to this black combo here. Swap the tops between the white ensemble above and the black one here, and you will get two more low-key sporty sets that are right on trend.

2. Look for Similar Colour
Just like tip #1, when a colour is in, you will find it in all sorts of items. Mint is one of my favourite hues, and I am glad that it is popular this season. The top, cami, and shorts here are from three different brands but they worked together just fine.

3. Mix Patterns of Similar Colour Schemes
This is a great way to reinvent those old items sitting in your closet. I used this abstract print peplum top as the basis, and paired it with different bottoms to create three “matching sets”. It doesn’t matter how crazy those prints are as long as the items are of similar colour schemes; in this case, it was blue and white.

This is a much longer post than usual. Thank you so much for reading. Please let me know about your thought on co-ords, and have a lovely weekend! 🙂
